The 3638 Mid-Rim Championship began this week at the Pixelito Pod Race Circuit on Malastare, with 16 pilots competing for the podium in the first of 11 races this season.
The quiet qualifier this year did not prepare audiences for the main event's explosiveness. The Pixelito race saw four pilots crash out. Nasiib Xumo collided with hometown favorite Ghar Khettar on the first lap, ending both of their nights before they even started, leading to a torrent of booing and jeering from the crowd. One of Rondar Jives's engines overheated as he battled for the lead shortly after the halfway point of the race. And veteran pilot Ben Quadinaros lost the coupling on one of his engines, losing balance and tumbling into the ground in the last turn of the race. While it looked like 4th place was a lock for Quadinaros, his best result in three seasons, he ultimately surrendered the position to Kaaza Tosca. Quadinaros ends the night in 13th place, out of the points positions, and seems primed to have yet another disappointing championship series ahead of him.
Last year’s champion, Cen Indraznet, placed first, looking to defend his title and best his record five wins last season. The 3635 champion Dois-Fois Genias took second, proving he still has the skills and vehicle to contend for wins. And top rookie Sleg Kaytu is showing himself to be the racer to watch this season, earning a surprising third place finish, much to the distaste of fans of Umidia Citi, who lost his chief engineer to the rookie's team over the offseason.
Occo Ninebar had a good race as well this week, working his way up from last on the starting grid to an admirable 8th place, while Sechkon Trola dropped from 3rd to 7th.
Next week, the racers head to beautiful Lake Nymeve on Takodano, to take on the Temple Loop. The race will include two past winners on the course. Cen Indraznet has consistently shown strength at this circuit, but Umidia Citi managed to eke out a win two years ago and might just do it again.
